While not well-known outside the industry, Anthony Petrello is one of the strongest leaders in the oil industry. He heads Nabors Industries which operates the largest fleet of oil rigging equipment in the world. Anthony Petrello has been among the most highly paid chief executive officers in the world, earning about $68.2 million in just 2014 alone. Rather than letting this success go to his head, however, by all accounts he is a humble person who has truly worked hard for what he has gotten.
Anthony Petrello grew up in Newark, New Jersey. He was born and raised in a working-class neighborhood where things like trust funds and expensive tutors simply didn’t exist. Newark is known for the hard work of its citizens as well as the fact that honesty is one of the most highly respected virtues. As a youth in this area, he had these core values of hard work and honesty instilled in him both by his parents as well as the schools he attended.
Growing up, mathematics was the area that Anthony Petrello most enjoyed and showed the most promise in. Early on he was able to learn differential calculus, for example, and seemed to be on a path to being a mathematician. His plan was to attend one of the prestigious universities in the United States with strong mathematical departments. He was accepted into Yale due to his Ph.D. level understanding of mathematical concepts and advanced math. Much to the relief of his parents he was given a full scholarship.
At Yale University, Anthony Petrello showed brilliance in solving mathematical equations. As his university education progressed, Petrello suddenly lost his interest in mathematics and decided to pursue another path. He chose to attend Harvard Law School in order to get a law degree. After graduating he worked for several years in the world of law at one of the top law firms in New York City.
It was in 1991 that Petrello again changed gears and entered the oil industry at Nabor Industries. He is now the companies chief executive officer where he manages the company’s strategic vision and day-to-day operations. His company has more than 100,000 people employed and operates over 1,000 separate oil rigs.
As a philanthropist Petrello donates millions each year to a variety of causes. He and his wife are particularly interested in helping causes that are for children who suffer diseases.
