Richard “Rick” Smith is an executive with a long history in the technology industry. For years he worked for a telecommunications company before joining Securus Technologies, Inc. in Dallas, Texas, in 2008. He is the company’s Chief Executive Officer and President. Rick Smith is a graduate of the State University of New York At Buffalo where he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in engineering. He also attended the University of Rochester which is where he earned his MBA.

Securus Technologies is a company in the correctional industry. They provide a range of technological products to many jails and prisons across the United States and Canada. These products are designed to monitor patients, provide a way for them to keep in contact with family and friends, and keep communities safe. Additionally, Securus Technology tools are used to both solve and prevent crimes.

In 1972, Rick Smith began his professional career at a telecommunications company, Global Crossing North America Inc. (later called Frontier Information Technologies). During his 26 years with this company he worked in a variety of leadership positions. This included time spent as their Chief Information Officer and as a controller. Other positions he held included Network Plant Operations Director, Telephone Operations Vice President, and Director of Business Development.

It was in 1998 that Rick Smith joined his next company in the industry, Eschelon Telecom Inc. His first two years at this company had him in the position of Chief Financial Officer. He was promoted to President in 2000 and in 2003 he was named the company’s Chief Executive Officer. Eschelon Telecom experienced explosive growth while Rick Smith was an executive there. When he started the company had annual revenues of $30 million. By the time he left in 2007 it had annual revenues of $350 million.

While Rick Smith has been with Securus Technologies he has overseen large growth with this company as well. Between 2013 and 2016 Securus Technologies invested over $600 million dollars under his direction. This money was spent on new technology, patents, and the acquisition of other companies in the correctional industry. One of these acquisitions that Rick Smith completed was that of JPay Inc. in April 2015. JPay had been a market leader in providing jails and prisons with the ability to take electronic payments. They provided other services as well such as email, educational apps, and entertainment apps.

As the leading company in the for-profit correctional space, Securus Technologies operates a large call center that is based in Texas. Rick Smith has made efficient and highly trained staff at this call center a priority. They answer many questions every day both from their customers, prisons and jails, but also from those who need help contacting their loved ones that are incarcerated.
